Physical Education
At DPS we believe that Physical Education is an integral part of our school curriculum. P.E at DPS is crucial for students’ overall development. It promotes physical fitness, mental well-being, and healthy lifestyle habits. P.E helps improve coordination, teamwork, and social skills while reducing stress and anxiety. Engaging in regular physical activity fosters discipline and resilience, enhancing academic performance and concentration. The DPS P.E program contributes to the holistic growth of students to help prepare them for a balanced and healthy future.
Prep – Year 2
The focus for the junior school students is to develop their ability to share equipment and personal space while cooperating with their peers and taking turns. Fundamental motor skills for movement are introduced such as running, skipping, side stepping and moving backwards. They learn to jump rope individually with a short rope and develop their timing to jump a long rope. Another major focus is learning how to underarm and overarm throw as well as catch a variety of balls. These skills develop into minor games including modified T- Ball and cricket, where they incorporate fielding and striking using a foam T- Ball bat and plastic cricket bat.
Year 3- Year 6
Students in Year 3-6 students consolidate their movement patterns on the field/court. They learn sports rules and the correct technique for forehand/backhand strokes and kicking and striking for sports including – badminton, tennis, soccer, basketball, football, netball, cricket, softball, rounders and hockey preparing them for interschool sport.
Year 5 and 6 students extend on these skills with match simulation and learn strategies to be successful in real game situations. The emphasis for all lessons is to meet the students at their point of need, so everyone can share success. Students are encouraged to be lifelong participants in sport by ensuring all lessons are active and fun.
Senior students are introduced to fitness components such as strength, endurance, power, flexibility, agility, speed and coordination through a series of tests to track their individual progress from Years 3-6.
