Doncaster Primary School students come from a rich mix of language backgrounds with many of our students having English as an Additional Language (EAL).
The EAL program is run across the school from Prep to Year 6. EAL students are students whose first language is a language other than English and who need support to develop proficiency in English. Student profiles and assessments are used to identify EAL students. Our program at DPS aims to support the work of the classroom teacher by providing lessons that are designed to assist students who are learning from the EAL Curriculum. It seeks to promote confidence and proficiency in all areas of English: reading, writing, speaking and listening. These English skills are developed by ensuring that programs focus on the individual literacy needs of students. We use a variety of teaching strategies, resources and task differentiation to ensure students can access tasks and develop their English skills. Small group sessions are offered to assist students in refining their linguistic abilities in a small supportive group with a qualified EAL teacher.
